Church History

The United Methodist Church is a church of Christ in which the pure word of God is preached and the Sacraments duly administered. This is a great protestant body, though it did not come directly out of the Reformation, but had its origin within the Church of England. The founder was John Wesley, a clergyman.

Methodism was created in England and then spread around the world. Like John Wesley, Bishop Frances Asbury and Bishop Thomas Coke made Methodism the leading protestant denomination in America. These circuit riders sent others across this great nation spreading the word of God. The South Carolina conference was organized in 1866 in Charleston, SC.

Wesley United Methodist Church of Hollywood, SC is a part of this great movement of people Methodist.

According to past historians and records, Wesley United Methodist Church was founded in October of 1891, and has since recognized this date as the official date of record. However, through previous research, historians realized the church was organized earlier than 1891.

The first sanctuary of Wesley UMC Hollywood was built on Hwy 162 approximately one and a half miles south of the township of Hollywood, SC. At this time Yonges Island was isolated and the only means of travel was by wagons and boats. Those men and women endured many hardships, but with their hard work and strong faith in God, they presevered!
